My Creative Space - Crochet Yellow Rug

It's autumn so of course another crochet rug has been started, but with a difference.  Using fabric in the center of a traditional granny square and I'm using yellow.  Not a big fan using bright colours, not sure why.

Each square is taking me 40 minutes to an hour to complete. So perfect to do, while watching my favourite TV shows.

Sonic the Hedgehog Costume - My Creative Space

It's been forever since I last took part in Kootoyoo's Creative Space. So here goes.

For those who don't know, I'm deeply immersed into the subject of science fiction in all it's shapes and forms.  Our son has also taken up the interest and of course computer games.  He asked if we could make a Sonic the Hedgehog costume for some up-and-coming science fiction conventions.  I'm not a costumer, my knowledge on sewing is basic, but I thought, why not.  It would be a great challenge.

My son found this amazing tutorial on Youtube .  So basically we are using this as a guide.




Well so far, so good.  Our progress so far.

We purchased wire from Bunnings, made the frame, paper mached it and
placed a bike helmet inside. Fur is purchased from Spotlight and foam from Clark Rubber.

Our next step was making the 6 spikes that appear on the head.

Well it's getting there.  Will keep you posted.

Well here I am, in my creative space. Amongst the number of tea mugs and paperwork, designing a Christmas card for my mum. Which will be sent to her friends.

Blogtoberfest Day 18 - My Creative Space

It's been a very long time since I ventured onto Kootoyoo - My Creative Space.  My creativity is slowly coming back, it went into hibernation during winter.  I never thought it would awake, but it did, thankfully.

Today I'm designing patterns.  I fully admit I'm not a pattern person, you could say it's a little foreign to me.  I'm always inspired when I see Curlypops and Yardage Design work.  Maybe one day I will get up to their level. :-)

My Creative Space.. Fabric

Yes you read correctly, fabric. But I can hear you say, but Beky deals with paper not fabric! Well I finally got my act into gear and sent one of my robot designs to Spoonflower for a test. I was very happy with the result, even though it felt very weird seeing my design on fabric, when usually it's on paper.

Spoonflower is an American company that prints people's designs onto fabric. They will print one off's or 'yards' of the fabric. Depending on what you require. I hope to do more in the future and see where this journey will take me.

My Creative Space......Another Blanket

Ok I have a serious problem, I just keep wanting to crochet blankets. We really don't need any more, but I just can't help it. I want to crochet pretty blankets, they make me happy and zenish (I know that's not a word, but I like it). I just want to have a pile of pretty crochet blankets to look at. I know I'm weird.... :-)

Once this one is finished, I start on my mum's crochet blanket.

My Creative Place - Orange Tart

Recently I received 3kg of oranges. So what to make, I know an orange tart.

Orange Tart

1 Quantity sweet pastry

1 tbs granulated sugar

2 oranges

Sweet Pastry

200g plain flour

pinch of salt

70g unsalted butter

80g caster sugar

1 egg, lightly beaten

1-2 drops of vanilla extract or essence

1. In bowl, sift flour and salt. Cut butter into cubes and rub into flour, until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs.

2. Stir in sugar. Make well in center of flour, pour in combined egg and vanilla. Mix with palette knife. Make into a dough.

3. Gather dough into a ball and flatten it slightly. Wrap in plastic and store in fridge for 20 min.

Orange Filling

200g unsalted butter

finely grated rind of 1/2 orange

300g caster sugar

4 eggs

6 eggs yolks

30g cornflour

140ml orange juice.

1. Preheat the oven to 180C (350F/Gas 4)

2. Grease tart tin 22cm across the base with butter. Roll out pastry and line the tart tin.

3. Bake pastry blind for 10min until firm. Remove beans and paper and return to oven for 15min.

4. Orange filling - Melt butter and orange rind, remove from heat. Sift sugar into bowl, and eggs and egg yolks. Sift in cornflour and mix well, then add orange juice. Pour egg mixture into the

saucepan with butter and the orange rind and place over med. heat. Stir constantly, bring to the boil. Remove from heat and pour into the shallow dish. Cover the surface with baking paper and refrigerate until cold.

5. Preheat grill, beat the orange filling and spread in the pastry shell. Smooth the top. Sprinkle sugar over mixture and place under grill to caramelize. Cool, the chill in fridge.

It was great to eat with whipped cream and the taste of the orange was stronger the next day. To view other creative places, click here.

My Creative Space......Crochet

Not sure if Kootoyoo is doing Creative Spaces today. Anyway, thought you might like to finally see the finished crocheted blanket that I started back in April. It was my first attempt crocheting this style. I was happy with it, to a certain extent. The edges are a little rough, but that's OK. I'm very eager to start on the next project. Crochet is my Zen. :-)

My Creative Space......Crochet

When the days are getting colder, I like to curl up on the couch and crochet warm blankets while sipping a tea. I decided that I must use up all my wool, that is accumulating around the house. So I decided to start crocheting a waving blanket. This will be my third crochet blanket and I'm sure there will be more in the future.

My Creative Space.......

I finally completed my most recent crochet project. I wanted a little basket to place my bath goodies in. So I made this little basket out of string, yes string. It was the perfect colour and it had that natural feel. Which was perfect for our new bathroom.

Recently I have been using the art of Zentangle TM as a way to slow down before bed time. So every night I have my routine of hot chocolate and learn a new Zentangle pattern.

My Creative Space....... Bigbot

It's Thursday again, and you know what that means? It's the time to show off what I have been creating.

I have been crocheting another robot from the book, Crobots. I'm making this Bigbot for my son, he requested different colours to be used. I am currently up to the arms, I must admit the pattern isn't making sense to me. The arms are looking very different to the photo, will need to look into it a little more. When I'm more awake and when my son is back at school, so I don't have any interruptions.

My Creative Space....... Space Invaders

Seeing it's school holidays, my son asked if we could update his bedroom. We are limited to what we can do on the walls, seeing the majority of the inside of our house is exposed brick.

In the past, I had seen a variety of decals on the Internet, and I wished I could use them. But of course you cannot stick them on brick. However I had a light bulb moment! Why not stick them on a large blank canvas. This would be a great solution until we get my son's bedroom walls renovated. My son decided he wanted space invaders, seeing he is really into computer games. Invaders decals by Vinyl Design, located in Sydney.

End Product

My Creative Space - My Son Sewing

My son has to create a scene in a shoe box showing the life of an insect, for school. He choose the bee. Yesterday I showed my son how to do basic hand sewing. It took him awhile to get the confidence, but by the end he was sewing at a faster pace. Oh while he was sewing, he was saying he was "sewing like a man". He is such a funny dag.

Blogtoberfest - Day 14 - My Creative Place

Since I finished my Granny Square Bedspread I have felt lost not having a crochet hook in my hand. It has just made me realise how much I have relied on crochet to relax me.

Luckily I now have the Made In Thornbury market to focus on, thus I have been making a lot of suburban notepads. I enjoy making these notepads. I have traveled to suburbs that I don't visit often and have seen places that I didn't even know existed. Thus I feel like I'm a tourist in my own city.

Blogtoberfest - Day 7 - My Creative Space

You may remember back in July , August / August I have been blogging about my granny square bedspread that I have been crocheting. Well it's almost there! I now just have to do the edging and fix a few stray strands of wool. I'm glad it's nearly over, my poor stationery business has been neglected, which isn't good.

I'm already thinking about the next crochet projects. Oh dear.......

My Creative Space

Creativity goes out the window during the school holidays, however I am growing some lovely vegetables from seeds on the kitchen bench. They get the sun most of the day and I watch them stretch their little leaves towards the rays of sun. Aren't they just cute.....

I have been making these cute little clouds for a personal project, with this Cristina Re paper that was given to me by a friend. I think we all need little clouds in our lives.

You may remember in my last creative space post I had commenced crocheting many granny squares for a bed spread. Well the assembling has begun. I am so enjoying doing this project, I know it will take some time to complete, but it will be worth it.

Recently I went to the library and borrowed a recent issue of Notebook. Well when I saw this crochet granny bedspread in the magazine, I knew I just had to make it.
